HTC Shift Preview - function over form
With the launch of the Advantage X7500, the rapid dissolution of boundaries between mobile and PC smartphones laptop has been pretty much broken.
The combination of some of the features that were thought impossible to install on your own trying mobile to maintain portability, HTC is aiming squarely at the business phone market itself without compromise on cutting or saving space.
With a sensor fingerprint, 40 GB hard disk drive, 1 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM, the HTC Shift is certainly well equipped and more like a mini-laptop than a phone intelligent. Using a touch screen 7 inches wide and adjustable screen angle allows you to type easily, there should be no difficulty in reading any e-mail messages.
Coming with Windows Vista Business, unlike the usual Windows Mobile 6 which is becoming customary in the market smartphones these days, HTC ensure that the change has enough features in your mailbox that are not currently available elsewhere.
Although you would expect from a device like this, the enormous wealth of connectivity options available, are downright amazing. It includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HSDPA 3G high speed data transfers and video calls (which are transferred through a high quality 1.2 mega pixel camera.)
As the HTC Shift is full of a variety of features, you can expect it to be no light dandy and you'd be right. 800g weight on a high (almost 10 Nokia 6300's) this is a mobile phone that is barely pocket, justifying its status as a mini-laptop.
Although in terms of the characteristics displacement, seems to have all bases covered, there are some essential criteria must be met if the change will have any chance of success. The battery and processor need to fare much better than the recent disappointing HTC TyTN II.
The price is an issue when you consider that a mid-range laptop can be found under £ 700 and that the UMPC market is already well established, with great players like the Sony Vaio UX1XN involved. SIM pending free trade price of the keys Shift is expected to be around the £ 840 mark, possibly in order to lighten the pocket enough to cope with the weight, which is similar to the price than Sony. Of course, is a great advantage to the HTC, the fact that it does not require connecting the computer to access the Internet when Wi-Fi is available. The fact that GSM is a unit means that also be able to buy the contract, significantly reducing the cost.
Overall this is an impressive aspect of the model and although it is quite strong, is good see a manufacturer focusing on those aspects rather than appeal, although to be fair, is not a bad looking beast.
The HTC Shift is to be launched in mid January 08 and should first be expected to be available O2 and Vodafone.
