How can I disable anti-virus programs when installing a printer?

I got a new Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows XP Media Center and Norton Antivirus. The instructions for Canon Photo Printer which I mean I have to install disable all anti-virus programs and automatically loading programs first. Help! I am a computer novice and trying my best, but I have no idea how to "deactivate" the programs. Thanks for any help you I can offer.
