Sony Vaio Hdtv Pc

HDTV / computer connectivity problem?
Ok I bought a 40 "Sony Bravia HDTV the other day. (1080p, 60 Hz) I tried connecting my laptop Vaio through the standard monitor connection using the cable that came with the TV and the other that we had at home. Every time I connect my laptop the computer acts as if an external monitor is connected, however, the TV flickers and then just say I have a sign "not compatible". I tried my brother's Acer laptop and connects it well. Are there any settings you should look for to make the sign for support or something? I'm not a genius computer or TV, I just want to be able to put my TV screen. Thanks, guys.
