Can anyone help me get desktop effects to work in Linux Mint?

Every time I try to enable even normal, the effects of special desktop Linux Mint (Gloria) said I can not do that. I have tried this on Ubuntu and got the same answer that I am currently on a Sony Vaio Laptop VGN-nw130j 4570 series with ATI Mobility Radeon HD. I also have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. if anyone can help that would be awesome.
