How can I get my built-in microphone to work in Ubuntu 9.10?

I have a Sony Vaio Vgn laptop with a webcam (built-in) that has a microphone too. How can I get that working via Skype / webcam software? Works well on Windows ... and my webcam works too, but not my microphone. PS: I tried to go to the audio input options and the change of the device, didn't work.
