Dell XPS M1210 Review
Put simply, the XPS M1210 is the most powerful and feature-packed 12.1-inch laptop we've seen. This elegant 4.8 pounds system combines a dual-core processor with a 256MB card discrete graphics, plus integrated mobile broadband and integrated webcam. Throw in better service for Dell XPS customers first and has one of the most thin and light notebooks this year, albeit at a price of $ 2356.
Sexy Dell thin and light is the perfect combination of style and power. Pop black on top this mini Media Center notebook, and you are greeted with a dazzling gray and silver color scheme. Despite its modest (11.7 x 8.7 x 1.2 inches) in size, the M1210 provides a keyboard and space that does not leave you feeling cramped when write. The only thing I like about it is that the Page Up key is too close to the right Shift key.
Above the keyboard lie three Power buttons, Dell MediaDirect (which lets you access media files without booting into Windows), and the 1.3 megapixel Logitech QuickCam. A touchpad with a system incorporated in the scroll bar underneath the keyboard. The front bezel contains a set of illuminated multimedia buttons for volume, play / pause, stop, forward and back, which actually comes in practice, while on a flight or when sitting in other crowded.
Watch DVD movies on the 12.1 - inch TrueLife was a pleasure as the bright colors and sharp images. The screen maintains a wide viewing angle, so two people can look a film in this system at a time. Dual headphone jacks on the front of the M1210 (title = "Dell XPS M1210 battery"> Dell XPS M1210 battery): two people can listen simultaneously, too. The speakers below the screen given metallic sound, which was disappointing for a notebook with multimedia features as strong.
The connectivity options include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but (the M1210 Compaq Presario R3000 battery is) the main attraction is the wireless Dell integrated mobile broadband card that connects to Verizon's EV-DO. (A number of Cingular's HSDPA card should be an option for the time you read this.) Road Warriors do not want to deal with tedious hunting hotspot will love this feature because they can connect to the Internet at broadband speeds from anywhere within range. We have a very good average of 563 Kbps, equivalent to fast Internet surfing. However, we noticed some dropped connections during the journey from New Jersey to Manhattan.
Rotating 1.3 MP Logitech Quickcam sits atop the display and works with an omnidirectional microphone for voice or video conferencing with the included copy of Skype. Video quality was not as good as external webcam, but it is convenient to have on board. Tracking technology face remains a subject centered in the frame, so you are free to move around a bit without ruining the shot.
The M1210 is a champion of productivity, as the 2.16-GHz Core Duo T2600 combined with 1GB of RAM scored a blistering score of 286 on our MobileMark 2005 benchmark test. As expected, this machine not hiccup when we scan the computer and a DVD simultaneously. Even with all that power, the M1210's battery lasted an impressive 4 hours and 29 minutes with Wi-Fi enabled.
Dell What makes this unique among laptop is 12.1 inches which houses an Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card with a whopping 256 MB dedicated video memory. The M1210 become a 3DMark03 score of 4456, which is good for a notebook in this weight class. When we ran our test FEAR, the XPS M1210 delivered 26 fps at 800 x 600 pixels, which is certainly playable (and better than the Sony Vaio Sz 23 fps), but less than stellar. Notches to the resolution of 1024 x 768, is simply not an option, as the collection system only 5 fps.
In addition to a one year warranty, the M1210 title = "HP Pavilion zd8000 battery"> (HP Pavilion zd8000 battery) comes with the Dell XPS white glove service. The package includes a 15 month subscription to software security and quick access to a dedicated group of specialists from XPS-trained support.
Offering integrated mobile broadband, camera web, useful multimedia controls, the excellent battery life and DVD recording in a lightweight package, elegant, the Dell XPS M1210 is a winner on several fronts. The who are looking for a strong all-around performer laptop with money to spend, you can not go wrong with this system.
Audio and Speakers
This is usually the part in a review that say "get a pair of external speakers." But I will not say that. I was surprised by the sound of the M1210 provided. In a 12 "notebook usually figure a little luck to get the system sounds from a loudspeaker at the bottom of the laptop. Played music DVD and watched on the M1210 and well positioned for forward firing 4-ohm speakers generated very good audio quality. I'm so impressed I'll tell you, if you travel, except in the most and leave the external speakers in the country - the volume and clarity of these speakers is more than enough. Bravo!
The two headphone jacks is a kind of cool thing too. In a plane or in the back of a car that could turn on a movie and your traveling companion each with their own headphones.
Wireless Communications
Dell has brought out all the stops in making the XPS M1210 (Dell Inspiron 9400 battery) wireless capable. Here's a quick summary of the wireless options:
Wi-Fi Options: Intel Pro / Wireless 3945 WiFi 802.11 a / b / g, Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g, Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a / g
Bluetooth (Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth internal wireless card)
WWAN (wireless access broadband Internet) Options:
or Dell Wireless 5500 Mobile Broadband 3G HSDPA (Cingular U.S.)
or Dell Wireless 5700 Mobile Broadband CDMA EVDO (Verizon Wireless USA)
The broadband cellular communication addition to the M1210 (Dell Inspiron 9300 battery) is very pleased. Dell offers the option of setting your M1210 with an internal antenna for either EVDO or HSDPA. M1210 My review unit was configured with the Dell Wireless 5700 EVDO modem. Dell's cellular antenna on the screen, no ugly antenna out. An important consideration, if you choose the web cam of AV communications package (a $ 100 option), but chooses not EVDO service at the time of purchase, you can upgrade and add WWAN later since it is only a mini-PCI card you'd need to plug in.
Across Verizon EVDO is a pleasure, if you have an existing Verizon Wireless is $ 60 per month for unlimited data transfer and if not, then the cost is $ 80 per month. You also have the option of paying $ 15 for 24 hour access to Verizon's EVDO network. If you are a very mobile person EVDO can be a blessing and keep worrying where is the next access point.
Speaking to find wireless hotspots, Dell has included a unique feature called "Wi-Fi Catcher "located on the left side of the notebook. You can use this switch to turn off all wireless radios by putting it in the position of off, but much better than that, push all the way to go and flash green while searching for a Wi-Fi, and if one is present, not light green solid, if not none is shown in orange. This Wi-Fi Catcher works whether the laptop is on, off or in standby mode. So there is no need for starting and search wireless networks, just press this button to find out.
Battery
Instead of implementing benchmarks battery that uses a real world battery drain test. 100% charged I set the screen at half brightness and stopped making the XPS M1210. Then, I decided to do various tasks such as downloading and installing Half Life 2, and playing a little web browsing, downloading and installing 3DMark05, watching 10 minutes of a DVD, edited some photos for this review and also turned off wireless and just let the M1210 (Compaq Presario V2000 battery) inactive for some time. In making this battery 9 cell was given by 5% windows closed and the notebook in 2h 58 minutes of use. Since the M1210 (HP Pavilion DV1000 battery) here is configured with a dedicated graphics Fi and a faster processor and Wi went - in which time is not bad. If you have integrated graphics, Wi-Fi and set the screen brightness lower easily could reach 4.5 hours. My test was very abusive in terms of using demanding programs while on battery power.
