Sony Q1 Earnings Released
Net profit fell 47 percent over the same period last year to  ¥ 35 million ($ U.S. 326 million U.S. dollars), while sales? from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com? virtually unchanged at  ¥ 2 trillion.
The effects of tough price competition in the electronics and cellular phone companies hit Sony's profits during the April-June quarter, said Tuesday.
However, sales unchanged figure hides a lot of movement within several of the key areas of business during the quarter Sony. Sales and profitability of its Bravia LCD televisions (LCD fluid) increased and the gaming business is finally back in the black after the launch of the PlayStation 3, however, and a Cybershot camera Digital Handycam and VAIO PC (http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-pc/) firms, which have been doing well for Sony recently, hit roadblocks in the form of increased competition.
Overall sales of electronic products rose 0.7 percent to  ¥ 1.4 trillion while operating profit fell 57 percent to  ¥ 44 billion. Regional sales fell in Japan and advanced in the U.S. and Europe, but this was denied by the strong yen, which meant Sony recorded a drop in U.S. sales and unchanged sales in Europe when calculated in the Japanese currency.
The electronics business was also affected by a fall in income from affiliated cell phone maker Sony Ericsson. The company provided 97 percent less than Sony's profits during the current quarter than it did last year.
On the positive side, increased sales of Bravia TV s (from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-TV/) led Sony regional electronic sales growth worldwide except in Japan where the popularity of recordable Blu-ray Disc was dramatic. Sony expects to ship 600,000 recorders Blu-ray Disc and 2.5 million Blu-ray Disc worldwide this year, he said.
Games for Sony, the industry saw sales 17 percent higher and a benefit Operating  ¥ 5 trillion in the back of strong shipments of PlayStation 3. During the quarter Sony sold 1.6 million consoles, which is more than twice as long than the same quarter last. In addition, PlayStation Portable shipments jumped 75 percent to 3.7 million.
Sony's operating profit in the first quarter was  ¥ 121 billion.
Looking ahead for the full year, Sony raised its sales estimate by 2 percent to ¥ 9.2 trillion dollars. At the time of its latest forecast that he expected the yen's value to stick around ¥ 100 per U.S. dollar during the current year but that now expects this to be around ¥ 105. The number of currencies not, however, lead to higher sales due to a more cautious approach in electronics.
Profit forecasts were cut to reflect the lower of href = "http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-Sony/"> Sony (from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-Sony/) Ericsson with full-year net income being taken down 17 percent to  ¥ 240 billion.
