Why I cannot open PDF files?

so I bought a Sony VAIO with a new operating system Windows Vista. I do not know why but I think the song PDF files are kept open longer than 30 seconds after opening just cause aa message appears saying something I have to buy Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. I I say I'm not going to buy and immediately close the PDF file. Why is this and what do I need to download / do so that you can overcome this problem. Ive gone to the Adobe site and download the free Adobe Reader program, but not help. please help me !!!!! I am a student and be able to read these files.
