Slooooow VAIO?
OK, kids computer! Sony VAIO PCG-K23. Lots of use but well cared for. P4 2.8, 512MB RAM, 60GB HDD. The computer is very slow. Light of the drive is in most cases. New format and reinstall the software, XP SP2. The software is only XP, Office, Norton Internet Security 2007, and Spybot. They seem to work well for a few minutes, then the hard disk light comes on and is dragged along until 10 minutes before doing anything. No viruses, no spyware presence (never been at all sites of poor quality or anything, and checks OK SpyBot, Norton full scan with updated definitions found nothing). Some idea? Is replacing the hard drive's worth a try? --- I think I've noticed. I went to crucial.com and tested the memory, and one of the modules is bad. The team of the poor has been trying to run XP on 256 MB! I'm going to buy 1GB of memory, hopefully that will fix it. Thanks great responses! ---
NO, not replace the hard disk. Let's do some basic maintenance tasks to see if you get some improvement. - Disk Cleanup to run - In the Tools section System Accessories - Open My Computer, then right click on drive C: and select Properties. Choose the Tools section and click Check Now. Check both tests, and yes, let it run after rebooting. You see, check disk will make sure your hard disk is running full. This test can take an hour or so. - Defrag run - from the System Tools section of accessories. More RAM can help. Search your model http://www.coastmemory.com But I think it has two modules 256 MB, which means you would have to buy two 512 MB modules. Having 1GB of RAM to be sweet. Check it out. Now I wonder if Sony is running on the hot side. By the way, PLUGGED if you run all the time, you might consider removing the battery and here's why. HEAT is the murderer of the battery. If the battery is fully charged, then remove for long sessions when plugged in. You will notice that your laptop is hot when is executed, it is best to remove the battery when not being used, as heat reduces its life. Good luck and Happy Computing!
