Report: Sony Vaio Vgn-FZ Series

It is the ultimate status symbol, with a price to match. Once again, Sony, Sony VGP-bps8 netbook category is shaking the very cliche, this time with a design that is only half the half light and thin other machines in its class, but which also includes a battery of that lasts twice as many models. did not stop there, adding integrated 3G and GPS for mobile moguls are able to pay its price tag ($ 1,299 to start, $ 1499 as configured). Yes, This ultraportable is not for everyone, but for those who want to travel really, really light, the VAIO VGN-FZ Series may be worth the extravagance.

Design

Sony VAIO promotes the X as the world's lightest laptop, and 1.4 lbs (with battery of four cells) is, even that has a processor similar but less than 7.0 inches, weighs 1.8 lbs. When you put the battery extending battery in the VAIO VGN-FZ, weight, 2.2 pounds-is still more than half one pound lighter than most 10-inch netbooks.

With dimensions of 11.0 x 7.3 x 0.6 (without battery), the VAIO VGN-FZ rivals in terms thick, yet its footprint is similar to other netbooks with the same screen size. When the battery is attached (by means of two bolts that give the bottom a quasi-steampunk feel), the back of the system rises by about 0.3 inches, and leans toward the user. The battery
So how was able to achieve this thin and light netbook? is made of a magnesium alloy, and the cover is constructed from carbon fiber. This material allows the screen to flex, which can be a little disconcerting, but Sony says it was designed to bend a little. Moreover, by an Intel Atom Z-series, which uses less energy (and generates less heat) that N-series Atom chips in most netbooks, the company was able to make incredibly slim netbook without a fan.

The lid of our review unit was matte black, and inside, with a brass bottom felt slightly rough to the touch. also offers the netbook with lid of a Champagne Gold Medal, but only for the model with 128GB SSD (more on that later).

Keyboard and touchpad

As other keyboard on the VAIO VGN-FZ Series is the island of style, but 88 percent of full size is a little smaller than most netbooks with 10 - to 12-inches. With dimensions of 9.5 x 3.5, the keyboard is about half an inch smaller in both directions, although the VAIO X package has a keyboard more big. This is because there is an inch of space on either side of the keyboard.

With the exception of a number lower right Shift keys were decently space and size, but overall, it felt like a bit tight. Also as a result of the thinness of the netbook, which there are fewer trips to the keys on other systems, what ended up hitting them harder than we are accustomed.

The touchpad is a decent size 2.1 x 1.6 inches, and offers little friction. However, as the keyboard, which could have been a little larger, especially considering that is capable of recognizing multitouch gestures like pinch and zoom. Two buttons below are small, but also sensitive.

Screen and Audio

As befits a netbook that costs $ 1,500, the X has a 11.1-inch VAIO display higher than normal resolution of 1366 x 768, we've only seen this series in the East is becoming a more common option, however, as at. While this resolution tends to make icons too small in 10-inch netbooks, not so much in a 11-inch screen.

When the contents of watch streamed over the Internet or play outside, we were impressed with the freshness and wide viewing angles of the screen, which in turn about 90 degrees to each side, without seeing the image inversion or reflections atrocious.

Being as thin as it is, we are not surprised by the lack of audio quality in thin tin; bass lines in the dream "by Aerosmith on" heard on Pandora was nonexistent, and the speakers could barely fill a small office with sound.

Ports and Webcam

Despite his small stature, he manages to get into most of the connectivity options, seen in almost every netbook others. On the left side of the VAIO X are two USB ports and a headphone jack. On the right is a VGA port and Ethernet. Just below the front lip is a card reader SD and Memory Stick from Sony. In an expensive system, we were surprised at the omission of an HDMI port, but since this netbook is designed for the production of content High definition is not a huge loss.

While not overly detailed, video camera is well balanced and showed tones accurate skin, in a call via Skype.
