Why the blank screen after the Windows XP logo?

It shows the Windows XP logo and the lower bar with green lines passing through it. Then he goes to a blank black screen and can not do anything. This is a Sony VAIO desktop. I have the recovery disk that erases your hard drive to the factory settings, but not start it up. Is there any other way that can erase my hard drive and restart, or is completely oblivious to the problem?

One point to check is if Windows is still the starter, if your computer is configured to start automatically on Windows without a password you should hear the sound home through your computer speakers.
