Netgear sky, and the wireless problem?

My daughter just bought a Sony VAIO, I broardband heaven with the Netgear modem they supplied. They sold me a wireless adapter and I installed the drivers, they took me to insert it into the top of the lap, but when I try connnected Internet it says can not connect. I am very limited computer knowledge so I do not know what to do now. Netgear thing is wireless and the laptop screen in the Wi-Fi icon is green on top of the page. welcome any help, but in simpler terms please!

Okay, I'm not sure of what he has, so my answer may be off. You must connect the phone line into the modem, the modem into the router, if you have one. If not, return plug the modem right on your computer, you must have Internet then. (do not know about any disk) Also if you try to view, right click on the small icon that looks like the 2 screens of computer (which must be white with a red x on top of them) right on the toolbar near where the time is displayed. Click connect to a network. Then a screen should reach a list of all networks that can connect. If you have a connection, is shown.
