Why my laptop to connect to the TV?

I just bought a cable to connect my Sony Vaio Laptop to television my Panasonic HD. The part of the cable that connects to the computer is blue with two screws on the side, but my laptop does not have a place to screw the screws, but on the cable itself fits perfectly. The other end has three colored wires, red, green and blue. I've gone through all the videos of 1-4, parts 1-4, HDMI, RGA, but none of them display the image. I clicked on the tab of display options, and have seen the TV monitors available and not one of them even though I said the previous screen I could use that window to connect to a TV. My DVD player uses the same wire colors and sometimes works, but had problems recently. The computer and television is fairly new, so I'm assuming that there is nothing wrong with that. Finally I have two quick questions. First, why are not the red cables, yellow and white, like a normal TV cables. And what my connection is called ... ex. RGA, HDMI, s-video, etc. Thanks

You may not use this VGA to component adapter. The VGA to component adapter is designed for special video cards with VGA ports which can also generate a YPbPr component signal (using three Red, green and blue RCA connectors). Not work with any VGA port. Its Vaio laptop has one of the special components capable VGA ports, so by which the adapter NEVER work. For a description of your HDTV Panny, it sounds like you have a VGA port. If so, why not just use a cable Standard VGA monitor (with two-Sub 15-pin male end) to connect to your VAIO?
