Dell Latitude Z600

You read car magazines for reviews of wheels you want to buy - and the strange machine that could never allow in a million years, but you can admire from afar. That's the Dell Latitude laptop slim Z600. Wait - a "sexy" Dell Latitude? Very little practical - or economic - but if in the future vision of high technology, this laptop that starts at around $ 2000-Plus is worth a look I want good.

First observation: the Z600 is wide and thin form. We're talking about a laptop with a screen of 16 inches and only 0.57 inches thick (and weighing about 4.5 pounds with the standard 4 battery cells). It defies the logic of creation of such a large machine, even thinner than many ultraportables. You want to take everywhere and show it off, but it has a 16-inch screen, have more difficulty finding a bag that fit (for what it's worth, Sony recently unveiled VAIO X Series ultraportables are a set of 0.02 in. thinner.) But I'm a little ahead of myself.

Rab the Z600, and feel soft, almost rubber, black-cherry coating recalls what it does in some Lenovo ThinkPad. Open your arms, and is greeted by a 1600-by-900-pixel panel. Along the right side, sensor technology TouchEdge Dell LCD replaces the need to saturate the machine with many shortcuts (you'll find volume controls stay on the keyboard, and a moment in the Shortcut Button - More in the second in a minute). Only about playing in the lower dash panel, and stops in a superposition of application shortcuts. Tap the table, and starts any program that you configure. It works really well.

And the screen colors are sharp enough to still images. The WLED backlit panel does a great job of reproducing the range of dark tones like the ocean, as well as diamonds, vibrant jungle scenes (think of the images shown in the pictures folder on your computer) and still looking sharp whether inside or outside. Glare is minimal. 720p video and installed on a drive of 128 GB solid state runs smoothly - a small triumph for the integrated Intel X4500 GPU, no doubt.

Under the hood of this test equipment: a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9600 CPU and 4 GB of RAM. Apart from the two aforementioned hard drives, these are the kind of guts you'll find in something like a timeline of Acer. Now, much as I would spit performance figures must have two caveats in mind. First, this machine has not run through the vaunted WorldBench 6 bank test yet - I had to steal the Z600 off just to give you this deep dive on the hands. Second, our machine came loaded with Windows Vista Ultimate. Safe bet is that the team had to consider buying - assuming you have tons of cash - will come loaded with some flavor of Windows 7. Similarly, is a bit early to give the battery life test results.

Want to get a little more life out of the machine - or not go to Windows itself? Try Latitude ON, a rapid fire OS that boots in 4 seconds. Not bad given escapes separate ARM CPU, 512MB of RAM, and Linux. Enter and use a 3G WWAN (networks area wireless) connection for easy access to email, contacts, and calendar synchronized with your Exchange server or more POP. Through of it, you can view MS Office documents and PDF files. It is obviously geared for the mobile businessman on the go. And you can also hit the Web.

But do not expect miracles. It will not sync with Outlook on Windows. And if you're trying to hot-swap between Windows and Latitude ON, you'll find some downtime between feeding of establishing an operating system and start another. Neat as this may be, we have seen variants of Linux fast boot option on HP laptops and Asus, as well

Dell also appears in a couple of proprietary applications that could really use. The 2 megapixel camera optional factory with software Dell pretty impressive catch to scan business cards, provided they maintain a "normal" card, the app to read all information and connect it to your manager contacts. The software also lets you scan documents directly into PDF format. You also have options for biometric lockouts, either through the FaceAware application that uses the camera or fingerprint scanner that sits next to the keyboard.

Speaking of the keyboard, it feels like finish rubber around the machine, soft to the touch, and cutting keys seem to conveniently elastic and responsive. While it looks all fine and well framed floating in the middle of the computer, I can not help wondering if this is the only area where the function is false for the worst. I would have liked to see a little more for the keys of a hair larger. And the key top of the line - the "Esc" buttons and "Delete" on the end - seems disproportionately small. You know what is not small? The area you mouse multitouch and good sized buttons.

Also a bit unusual and one of this laptop's selling points is the wireless laptop charging station base. This $ 250 add-on turns on the Z600 through a panel similar to how the charger Induction coil in the Pre Palm Touchstone. The laptop loads as fast as if connected directly to the power brick. And while some bloggers to mourn the station of how big the load is, I can honestly say that after testing, that is no larger than other high docking stations I've seen. Simply does his work in high-tech style. What I really want, however, is smaller, more intelligent load pad that can feed the correct tension to different devices.

The other option is a wireless docking station. No dongles required, the box comes with your Z600. It houses four USB ports 2.0, along with DVI video output, headphone and microphone outputs. Another excessive accessories that came with the Z600: The game cleverly 4X external BD-ROM drives up the price even more. But if you're buying this machine, you're not what I would consider "savings".

Despite being so thin, the Z600 has room for a USB 2.0 port, a hybrid USB / eSATA port, a DisplayLink video port and an earphone / MIC. Cleverly hidden behind Screen - Battery brackets - are the power and Ethernet connectors. Unfortunately, trying to achieve so much in so little space, some sacrifices must be made. The lack of a flash card reader can not be a deal breaker for all executives considering this model but not for me. And the audio is strong, but cash secondary. Get headphones, Stat. Beyond that, you get Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth, 3G WWAN optional, and the ability to configure it for WiMAX.

The Z600 is an elegant looking machine. So much so that a test flight near the Macworld office brought a couple nods. But is it perfect? No. Although it is incredibly thin and surprisingly light, remains of 16-inch laptop that you may find it difficult to fit into a travel bag. The Z600 can be perfectly appropriate as a symbol status between offices, but for a mobile practice have asked me a laptop with a smaller screen. Maintain the lowest the price (and size of the screen), and this could be a murderer in ultraportables.

In summary, the Z600 is much not for everyone. In fact, I think he did this notebook to sell only to Michael Dell and maybe a couple of his teammates to shine. However, Smarts boasts a pair of design and technological innovations that I like to see trickle down to more mainstream laptops (with a little more clever implementations). Until then, I can dream. Also, look a final score when we get results of lab tests.
